Standard poodles are the largest of the poodle varities, ranging in size from about 20 inches tall to "quite large."  However, even "quite large" is still about 3 feet tall or less at the shoulders and may weigh 50 pounds or so.

Standards are very smart dogs and are generally very easy to house train, often being well on their way to being trained before leaving our home to join their new homes. and are often being well on their way to being trained prior to leaving as puppies to join their new home.  Standards are typically "people" dogs, bonding strongly with and remaining tremendously devoted to the people they live with.

Like other sizes of poodles, standards require frequent grooming to maintain their coat.  The characteristic that makes them hypoallergenic is that they do not shed.  Their hair grows constantly just like ours, and that means they need to get regular hair cuts and have their hair washed.  If not, the same thing happens to their hair as what happens to our own - too much hair and matted.  We like the fact that our dogs do not add that extra something (hair) to the meals we eat and the clothes we wear, and we think the time spent grooming or having our poodles groomed is definitely worth it!
